As a Singaporean, I was delighted that the historic meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou took place on our own land ("Historic meeting for Xi and Ma in S'pore"; Sunday).
I salute Singapore and our Government's efforts in facilitating this milestone meeting, since both China and Taiwan are longstanding friends of ours from founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew's era.
It could not have been an easy task, as this meeting came 66 years after the last meeting between top leaders from both sides in 1949.
As the whole world watched us, we were able to facilitate the start of direct exchange and communication between the top leaders of China and Taiwan. This will certainly reduce tensions between both sides.
