President right to move out of flat

I was cheered by the news that President Halimah Yacob would soon move out of her Yishun flat (President Halimah to move out of Yishun flat; Oct 3).

I do not belittle her humility in living in an HDB flat.

But, in a world beset by security risks, there is a real concern that Madam Halimah may unwittingly put herself and her security team in danger.

The office of the President of Singapore is the highest position in the land, and carries with it utmost dignity, respect and responsibility.

The people who have seen and appreciated her lifetime of servant leadership will consider her the rightful occupier of the Istana.

It is a dwelling befitting our President, just as leaders overseas are installed in grand iconic dwellings.

I look forward to many open house days at the Istana where Madam Halimah will, no doubt, continue to share her generous hospitality with Singaporeans from all walks of life.
