The company involved in the tragic escalator accident in China ("Mum saves son before fatal fall into escalator pit; last Tuesday), Suzhou Shenlong Elevator, lists several major certifications that it has obtained on its website.

Yet, news reports have implied that the escalator on which the accident occurred did not meet the necessary safety specifications.

It is stated clearly on several Chinese commerce websites that the company has exported its products to Singapore.

I urge the authorities to step up their checks on escalators and elevators here, especially those manufactured by this particular company.
