National unity vital for our future

The video I Will Not Die For Singapore brought up a very pertinent point on the lack of a sense of belonging among the people here ("'Majulah' clip draws strong criticism... but praise too"; Feb 21).

Cynics say the video is trying to promote loyalty to the Government. But it does not, and, instead, calls for loyalty to the Singapore nation.

National unity serves as a keystone to the success of nationalism, which is a fundamental ideology upon which a modern nation-state is built.

Nationalism benefits the nation by motivating and inspiring the people to stand as one and work together for the betterment of their homeland.

The video's message is clear. It is the desire to build a more ideal and united Singapore in the future. There is nothing wrong with a little idealism.

If we are willing to stop looking at everything with scepticism and stop suspecting that there are hidden agendas, then perhaps we can achieve greater things, such as building a uniquely Singaporean brand of nationalism to bind us together.

Some have wondered how Singapore can continue to succeed in the next 50 years.

The answer lies in being able to stand together as one, and believe it when we say "Majulah Singapura".
