Multi-pronged effort needed to take down ISIS

I applaud Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob for coming forward to take the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist organisation to task and expose its hypocrisy ("Counter ISIS ideology on social media: Halimah"; Nov 22).

I hope more Muslim individuals and groups in Singapore will emulate Madam Halimah in condemning the atrocities committed by ISIS in the name of Islam.

Her idea to kill the wrong ideology of ISIS by spreading the right teachings of Islam is an excellent idea.

But teaching the right values alone will not bring about the desired results.

There are four other approaches that can be taken, namely: aerial bombings on ISIS, ground attacks, blocking ISIS ideology on social media and crippling the individuals and/or countries that sponsor ISIS and provide it with resources such as money, arms and manpower.

To be effective, all five approaches must be put into operation simultaneously.

No one country can bring an end to ISIS.

It has to be a multilateral effort by all countries.
