Moved by volunteers' act of kindness

I was deeply moved by last Wednesday's article, "Help for man, 77, plagued by bugs".

When bedbugs infested my grandmother's place earlier this year, many of her loved ones avoided paying her a visit.

Such a reaction is understandable, especially from those with young children, as there is a real risk of bringing the pests home.

Volunteers like Fion Phua and Veronica Tan have displayed the true spirit of love and care, a rarity in our fast-paced society.

As Singapore looks to celebrate its 50th birthday, such selfless acts serve as a reminder that as our nation progresses, we are defined by the way we treat our fellow citizens.
