Mobile coverage in lifts not compulsory

Mobile operators are required to provide more than 85 per cent service coverage in each building as part of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore's (IDA) Quality of Service standards ("Phone signal in lifts necessary in emergencies" by Mr Chin Kee Thou; Aug 12).

While the provision of mobile coverage in lifts is not compulsory, the IDA encourages mobile operators to extend coverage to these areas.

Lifts in HDB blocks are monitored by a tele-monitoring system (TMS).

In the event of an emergency, the Essential Maintenance Services Unit and relevant town councils will be notified immediately via the TMS.

A lift rescue team will then be dispatched to assist residents trapped in the lift.
