We thank Dr Gil Simon Schneider for his feedback and share his concern ("2G network shutdown will be costly for users of basic phones"; Nov 14).
That is why the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has required the mobile operators - M1, Singtel and StarHub - to put in place measures to ensure that existing 2G phone users, including seniors, are not worse off from the transition to the 3G or 4G network.
All existing 2G phone users will be able to enjoy their current subscription plan on the 3G network at no additional cost.
As all users will also need handsets that are at least 3G-compatible, mobile operators are offering low-cost 3G handsets for those who need to upgrade. These handsets are available to anyone using 2G services today.
IMDA's Digital Inclusion Silver Infocomm programme also offers courses to help seniors through this transition. These courses promote awareness among seniors and teach them how to use devices such as smartphones.
Courses are conducted at convenient locations around Singapore, such as self-help group centres, voluntary welfare organisations and community centres.
More details on the available courses can be found at www.imda.gov.sg/sii
The cessation of 2G services will open up opportunities for the delivery of faster and more pervasive mobile services for the growing number of smartphone users in Singapore.
This is a development that is taking place across the world as growing demand for mobile bandwidth necessitates the adoption of newer technologies such as 4G, which can make more efficient use of our limited spectrum resources.
IMDA and the mobile operators have implemented measures to help existing 2G users make a smooth transition and ensure that they are no worse off.
IMDA and the mobile operators are closely monitoring the transition and will strive to minimise any inconvenience to end users.
