What a breath of fresh air to read Professor Josephine Lang Chin Ying's commentary calling on educationists to reflect on their teaching methods ("Throw out the chalk and talk"; last Sunday).

It is encouraging to read that there are people who are open to reflection and change in their teaching practice for the benefit of students' learning.

Students and teachers, like everyone else, are on a learning journey that does not start or end in a formal educational setting.

What I want for my children is that they leave their formal education with the skills and qualities needed to navigate their way in an ever-changing world filled with pressing issues.

I want them to be empowered in so many ways, not least to be lifelong learners and global citizens who keep their eyes, minds and hearts open.
