Law on fire extinguishers for homes needed

The advice from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for residents to keep a fire extinguisher at home is not good enough if there is no law to make it compulsory and to ensure that the appliance is kept in working condition.

Otherwise, the fire extinguisher will be just for show and induce a false sense of security.

Besides, some residents may not even know how to use it properly.

The SCDF could consider buying fire extinguishers in bulk and selling them at low prices to residents.

A representative from each household should then attend a lesson on how to use the extinguisher.

Meanwhile, the SCDF should also advise residents on what to do in case of a massive fire in a high-rise building - is it better to head to the roof or downwards?
