The Sunday Times provided a thoughtful and insightful commentary on Singapore's multiracial society ("The race issue: How far has Singapore come?"; Nov 8).
As social anthropologist Lai Ah Eng pointed out, while principles of racial harmony are sound and well established here, we can do better in putting these into practice. To this end, I suggest that celebrations of festivals here be done not just within a community but across communities.
For example, Little India was well decorated for the recent Deepavali. But why restrict the beautiful displays to just one area? How about putting up simple but festive decorations, banners and posters at community centres and clubs as well? Such decorations bring home the fact that there is diversity in our shared space. This can be done for Hari Raya as well.
Involving everyone in festivals can raise awareness of racial diversity and improve inter-racial connections among Singaporeans.
