I was heartened to read yesterday's report ("All national servicemen to get free insurance"), as my older son is now doing his national service.

The move to give both full-time and operationally ready national servicemen free life and personal insurance coverage is timely.

This shows appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices these men make. It also helps to ease the worries of parents somewhat.

National service remains as critical as ever, and NSmen play an important role in safeguarding the security of Singapore, to ensure a stable environment for business and economic growth.
