Inclusive broadcast of speech

Many deaf friends and I were delighted to watch Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat's Budget speech last Friday.

The broadcast came with live captions on Mediacorp's Toggle online platform.

Apart from this, there was live sign language interpretation provided for deaf signers.

This is really very inclusive for everyone and addresses the accessibility issues for people with disabilities, especially the deaf community.

I thank the Media Development Authority and Mediacorp for their efforts to make a national TV event accessible to everyone.

I hope live captioning can be extended permanently to more live TV programmes.

This meets the provisions of the articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in areas of accessibility.
