Have separate number series for private-hire cars

In his National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke about levelling the playing field for taxi, Uber and Grab drivers ("Levelling the playing field for taxis, Uber, Grab"; Aug 22).

One "leveller" that might work is having a separate registration series for Uber and Grab private-hire vehicles.

The authorities could resurrect the now-defunct "SZ" series used widely to identify rental cars in the 1980s and 90s, for example, SZB1111A.

Dedicated number plates also provide greater convenience for the administration of insurance, road tax and other issues related to private hire, avoiding similarities with private cars.

Decals may even be unnecessary because passengers would be able to identify a private-hire car through the vehicle's registration series.
