It is great that the grit and determination of an SBS Transit bus driver and a ComfortDelGro cabby in rendering assistance to extinguish a car fire is recognised ("SBS Transit bus captain lauded for stopping vehicle to put out car fire along Farrer Road"; ST Online, last Wednesday).
As the bus driver was trained to handle the fire extinguisher, he was able to assist in the situation until the emergency response vehicles arrived.
This incident shows the importance of having emergency and contingency-related training programmes.
But being well-trained does not always result in pro-social behaviour.
Another lesson from the incident is the importance of having a helpful nature and wanting to assist others.
