Firm action needed to reduce use of plastic bags

Singapore is way behind in the fight to reduce plastic bag use (Supermarts in talks to charge for plastic bags; Sept 24).

I take reusable bags with me when I go to the supermarket, and keep one or two folded bags with me for any unplanned shopping.

But it is ludicrous for FairPrice to give me a 10-cent discount for using my own bag when the customer before me walks away with more than 10 plastic bags completely free.

Cities in Malaysia and China stopped giving out free plastic bags overnight.

Shoppers there must use their own bags or buy one.

They are also given the counter space to pack their shopping.

It is a matter of having the political will to act.
