Excerpts from readers' letters

JAIL THE ONLY DETERRENT FOR CHEATS

I was shocked that the parents who provided a false address in the Primary 1 registration exercise were only fined when they were discovered and found guilty by the court (Couple fined for giving false address in Pri 1 registration; Jan30).

A mandatory jail sentence should be set for both parents. Only this will deter parents from cheating.

DON'T BLAME SAUDIS FOR EXTREMISM

The insinuation that some children's books sold here containing extremist content originated from Saudi Arabia is troubling (Parents, clerics flag kid's books from Saudi Arabia; Jan 30). Saudi clerics have long condemned terrorist groups. Their fatwas also prohibit Muslims from engaging in foreign conflict.

Such insinuations could distract Muslims from their evidence-based fatwas, causing them to be exploited by other pseudo-intellectual and opportunistic scholars.

BETTER WAYS TO EXPRESS YOURSELF

Profanities should make a hasty exit from youngsters' vocabulary (Do more to curb use of profanities, by Mr Koh Seng Lin; Jan 29). Using them only worsens a situation.

They can hurt the feelings of others, break good relationships and leave a nasty impression of the speaker. There are healthier ways of expressing yourself.

S'PORE NOT EASILY WIPED OUT

We hear talk that China is getting so powerful in technology, innovation and trade that it will eventually overwhelm us.

Let us remember that Singapore has some intrinsic values which are hard to replace, like respect for law and strict anti-corruption practices. These are part of our culture and way of life, and are ingrained in us.

In this competitive world, Singaporeans must have the guts to believe in ourselves and that we will not be easily replaced and wiped out.

BENEFITS OF CROWDFUNDING

The potential in crowdfunding is limitless (Increase in crowdfunding cases worrying; Jan 26). Funds could be raised not just for personal crises or medical expenses, but also for charitable causes, scientific projects or the publication of books.

Individuals and organisations could come up with innovative ideas, perhaps to reverse the effects of global warming, and then use crowdfunding to make their idea a reality.
