Draw more young people into engineering

I agree with the views expressed by both Ms Lim Zi Kun ("Engage engineers with more interesting work"; ST Online, July 26) and Mr Jairaj Ramanathan ("Let engineers focus on engineering"; July 26).

Engineering as a profession has lost its lustre and glamour in recent years. In Singapore, many academically brilliant engineering graduates prefer to work in the legal, banking, teaching and other sectors. Several of my acquaintances have done the same.

The Manpower Ministry and the Workforce Development Agency need to work with employers and other stakeholders, such as the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, to revamp the image of engineering to increase its appeal to the young.

Unless the trend is reversed, Singapore will soon face an acute shortage of engineers and would have to resort to foreign workers to fill the gap.
