Doctors are victims of modern medicine's success

From the perspective of a healthcare professional, the illustrations of waste in healthcare by health economists are skewed (Waste in healthcare a costly problem, say experts; March 28).

In an increasingly litigious environment where the regulatory authorities do not appear to understand the challenges in medical diagnostics and therapy, it is inevitable that doctors practise defensive medicine.
