Determine real reasons for bias against older workers

I agree with Mr Loh Wai Poon's views on improving job opportunities for older workers ("Help wanted? Look to workers in their 50s"; yesterday).

Having attended the same public forum Mr Loh was at, I understand his concern about the lack of opportunities for older Singaporean workers within the labour market, while some businesses are calling for the loosening of restrictions so that foreigners can take on these jobs.

It is important to look deeper into the root causes of why companies are reluctant to hire older workers.

Sometimes, older workers are automatically rejected based on their ages on their resumes.

It would be a good idea for the Government to get real and honest feedback directly from employers about the reasons for the bias and work together to create new solutions to make them employable.

Only then will the Employment Future idea that Mr Loh has floated be able to succeed and stay sustainable.
