Besides using our own containers, more can be done in other industries too, to reduce wastage ("Offer rebate to those who use their own containers" by Madam Chua Siew Hong; Sept 1).
For instance, diners tend to overestimate the amount of food they can consume, but may be too embarrassed to ask if they can take the uneaeten portion away or unsure if they can do so.
If restaurants took the initiative to ask if they would like to take away their leftover food, this would significantly reduce food wastage.
With regard to plastic bags, businesses could replace them with paper bags, or make consumers pay for each plastic bag used.
When I was in the United States, I noticed that plastic bags there are of good quality. This can reduce the number of plastic bags that need to be produced, as each bag can be reused many times.
Perhaps the Singapore Government could look into providing incentives for companies to adopt such practices. Consumers should also make an effort to reuse bags.
I hope consumers and industries can work together to reduce wastage, making Singapore a greener place.
