MP's resignation

Ask the right questions

As a resident of Bukit Batok, I am naturally concerned about Mr David Ong's recent resignation ("MP David Ong resigns; by-election to be called"; Sunday).

However, I am more concerned that the right questions are not being asked in the lead-up to the by-election

Instead of focusing on the details of the affair or the political fanfare, I would urge my fellow residents to think about the following:

•Did the "personal indiscretion" affect how Mr Ong managed town council affairs? If so, what is the impact and are there grounds for further investigation?

•What is the impact of his resignation on the continuity of existing projects, for instance, the construction of the covered linkway around Bukit Batok Central? This is especially important if an opposition party wants to win the by-election.

•Do the prospective candidates from all the parties have a local link to Bukit Batok? If not, how will they familiarise themselves with Bukit Batok's issues?
