Appreciate creative power within them

It is heartening to see the outpouring of support for the artistic talents of artists with disabilities, sparked by the dinosaur purse that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's wife Ho Ching carried at the White House ("Family of teen behind dinosaur purse surprised by media flurry"; yesterday).

Some people have suggested that the next National Day Parade (NDP) bag be designed by artists with disabilities.

In fact, in 2008, artists with disabilities from charity group Very Special Arts Singapore, together with students from the Schools of the Arts, created the artwork that was used on the NDP funpack that year.

It was also well received by the public. A video documenting the creation of the funpack was also shown during the parade.

Very Special Arts Singapore has been at the forefront of promoting the talents of people with disabilities. It has organised art exhibitions and a concert annually to showcase and celebrate these people's creative powers.

It is hoped that with awareness of the artistic talents of people with disabilities raised by the dinosaur purse, more people will come forward to support these artists.
