Singapore stocks make slight gain despite weak China data

The local stock market rose 21 points, or 0.65 per cent, to 3,274.76, making it one of the few gainers in an otherwise gloomy day in regional markets.

Many bourses across Asia ended lower after China announced that manufacturing activity shrank further in July, sparking worries of an even greater slowdown in the world's second largest economy.

At home, gainers outnumbered losers 265 to 170.

Some 3.6 billion shares changed hands with a total value of $1.47 billion.
