Japanese information technology giant NEC Corporation announced on Monday that it will set up a new research centre in Singapore to provide social infrastructure solutions to global markets.

NEC Laboratories Singapore will be NEC's fifth research centre. It will sit in NEC Asia Pacific, the group's Singapore-based regional headquarters.

The research centre aims to provide solutions for areas of concern that projects of Singapore's government and universities may have, such as safety, big data, security and smart energy.

NEC president Nobuhiro Endo said: "The NLS aims to accelerate the time-to-market of new technologies that help contribute to the resolution of a broad range of business and social concerns."
