Departmental store Metro will take up six levels at The Centrepoint along Orchard Road and become the mall's new anchor tenant by the end of the year.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Metro and Frasers Centrepoint Malls said the new Metro store will occupy 130,000 sq ft of retail space.

The lease of existing anchor tenant Robinsons ends in May before it moves out of The Centrepoint after 31 years.

Refurbishment works for the new Metro will start shortly after, for it to be opened in the fourth quarter of the year.

The new Metro store will also include some eateries within its space to offer shoppers an avenue to rest and recharge.

This will be the second Metro store along the Orchard Road belt, with the other being an anchor tenant of the Paragon.

Metro will "complement" The Centrepoint's new tenant mix with the mall's renewed focus on contemporary fashion and lifestyle products, both parties said.

The mall will house different clusters catering to high street fashion, cosmetics, lifestyle and sports, among others.

Mr Christopher Tang, the chief executive of Frasers Centrepoint Commercial, said he is confident that the new partnership with the revamped Metro will offer more options to enhance shoppers' retail experience.

Metro's chief executive, David Tang, said the "revitalised Metro will be a departure from the typical shopping experience" and feature products and brands that are exclusive to the departmental store.
