TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo stocks opened 1.54 per cent higher on Tuesday after record-setting advances on Wall Street.

The Nikkei 225 index soared 218.42 points to 14,367.94 at the start.

The Dow and S&P 500 Monday closed at fresh record highs, spurred by a strong rally in technology stocks that lifted the Nasdaq Composite Index by nearly 1.8 per cent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.68 per cent to 16,695.47, while the broader-based S&P 500 gained 0.97 per cent to 1,896.65.

The Nasdaq added 1.77 per cent to 4,143.86.

The dollar was at 102.19 yen early Tuesday, compared with 102.09 yen in New York Monday afternoon.

The euro bought US$1.3755 and 140.58 yen, compared with US$1.3758 and 140.50 yen.
