Tokyo stocks open up 0.99%

TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo stocks opened 0.99 per cent higher on Monday after Wall Street logged record closings last week.

The Nikkei 225 index was up 145.13 points at 14,777.51 in the first few minutes of trade.

The Dow and S&P 500 on Friday closed at new highs following fresh merger and acquisition activity.

The dollar was firm early Monday, trading at 101.85 yen compared with 101.75 yen in New York Friday afternoon.

The euro bought US$1.3626 and 138.77 yen against US$1.3630 and 138.75 yen.
