Messaging apps and entry of new players pose challenges for telcos

For industry observers watching the rapid changes overtaking the media and telecommunications scene, the news of StarHub axing 300 staff did not come as much of a surprise.

They point to the litany of challenges that incumbent telcos StarHub, Singtel and M1 face, including the rise of instant messaging on apps such as WhatsApp, the entry of new players and the high cost of upgrading infrastructure.
