I don't expect stratospheric returns from the banks but I've always had a beef with the low interest rates paid on fixed deposits

All I want is peace of mind that my money is safe and gives a decent enough return but over the years the norm has been rates of as low as 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent or 0.3 per cent.
