Ben joined The Straits Times in April 2019 after 27 years with Reuters where he served as Taipei and eventually Beijing bureau chief. During his 40-year journalism career, he has broken some of the biggest stories out of China and Taiwan, including the imminent death of paramount leader Deng Xiaoping in 1997 and the surprise rise of President Xi Jinping in 2007. Ben has won 13 international journalism awards and interviewed numerous Asian leaders, including Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, Taiwan Presidents Chen Shui-bian, Ma Ying-jeou and Tsai Ing-wen and Philippine Presidents Fidel Ramos, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Benigno Aquino III.
