Been wanting to join a gym but found it either too expensive or too inconvenient?
Well, there is no time like the present and one option is to sign up with the country's biggest "sports club": ActiveSG.
Launched in April 2014, ActiveSG is a national movement that aims to encourage Singaporeans and permanent residents of all ages to get involved in a healthy lifestyle through sports.
The project was recently awarded the International Olympic Committee's Sport and Innovation Trophy for its efforts.
The latest National Sports Participation Survey showed that over 60 per cent of Singaporeans now engage in sports at least once a week, up from 42 per cent in 2011.
ActiveSG, which is part of the $1.5 billion Sports Facilities Master Plan to strengthen the sporting landscape and aims to provide Singaporeans with a venue to play and exercise within 10 minutes of their homes by 2030, has crossed the one-million mark. According to figures as of March, there are 1,011,529 ActiveSG members.
All members, upon signing up, are eligible for a complimentary $100 ActiveSG credit. Over two-thirds have utilised their free credit.
While those 16 years and over are eligible for the ActiveSG scheme, those who are younger are eligible for supplementary membership, tagged to the accounts of their parents or guardians.
Besides swimming pool and gym admissions, the ActiveSG $100 can be used for a variety of ActiveSG programmes and activities as well as for booking ActiveSG facilities.
Here are some tips on getting your MyActiveSG account started and taking your first steps to a healthier life.
REGISTER
You need an ActiveSG membership, which has a lifetime validity. Download the "ActiveSG" app on your smartphone and click on members.myactivesg.com to complete the verification process.
The complimentary ActiveSG $100 will be credited to your eWallet, which can be topped up and requires a six-digit PIN to set up.
Or visit any ActiveSG sports centre or swimming complex with your student pass, NRIC or birth certificate and register in person at the guest services office. No membership card will be issued.
Redeem credits on the ActiveSG app, online at myactivesg.com or at sports centres using your NRIC, Singapore driving licence, school Smart card, senior citizen's concession card or PAssion card.
SIGN UP FOR ACTIVESG PROGRAMMES
A wide range of activities is on offer, subject to availability. They include Piloxing (a cardio fusion workout of standing pilates, boxing and dance), aqua spinning (cycling on stationary bicycles in a pool) and urban trekking (fitness walking using Nordic walking techniques).
BOOK A FACILITY AND PLAY YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT
Choose from among badminton, squash, tennis, basketball and table tennis courts. Rates are published online (myactivesg.com/facilities/ sport-centres/individual-rates), along with terms and conditions.
OR HIT THE GYM AND POOL
There are 16 ActiveSG gyms and 24 swimming complexes islandwide. Daily, monthly and annual rates are published online (myactivesg.com/ about-activesg/membership), along with terms and conditions.
HOW LONG ARE MY ACTIVESG CREDITS VALID FOR?
The complimentary ActiveSG $100 expires on Dec 31 of the following year upon verification of the ActiveSG account.
ActiveSG Dollars issued this year will expire on Dec 31 next year.
These can be extended, however, for 12 months by performing any transaction using the member's account during the year of expiry.
For example, if your ActiveSG Dollars are expiring on Dec 31, and you perform any transaction within this year, the expiry date will be auto-extended to Dec 31, 2017.
