A woman in China pulled the plug on her adulterous husband’s life support after he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in his lover’s home, reported Chinese and Hong Kong media.

The reports did not state when this happened. The man was from Liaoning province in north-eastern China and was rushed to the hospital by his lover, reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

His lover tearfully begged doctors to save the man she called her husband. But after providing emergency treatment and admitting the man into the intensive care unit, doctors could not find the woman, reported Chinese news outlet NetEase.

Another woman – the man’s wife – arrived soon after. Doctors informed her that her husband, who was in a coma, could not live for long relying on medical equipment.

He had a slim chance of survival if he went under the knife, but surgery would be extremely costly, reported Hong Kong media outlet Dim Sum Daily.

The NetEase article stated that the woman had been aware of her husband’s infidelity for more than a decade. She refused to sign the consent form for surgery, and said the couple no longer had feelings for each other. She added that her husband did not give her living expenses and had not returned home for more than 10 years.

SCMP reported that Chinese law dictates that doctors explain risks of surgery to a patient’s close relatives and get their written consent, if the patient is unable to make decisions.

If the family members cannot agree on a treatment option, the head of the medical institution can approve any treatment.

The wife’s decision sparked discourse on Chinese social media platforms.

Some netizens felt that the woman was heartless, while others thought her adulterous husband was merely getting a taste of his own medicine.

“She is heartless. No matter what, giving up treatment is giving up a life,” said a Douyin user.

“Your wife will accompany you until old age. Treating your wife well is treating yourself well,” said another user.
