The summit is gasping, but three men will keep the hope alive

In the end, it was a note of regret, the acknowledgement that a historic denouement was agonisingly out of reach, that punctuated this episode like an ellipsis.

History will have to wait, but US President Donald Trump was right to call off a summit that had been arranged too impulsively and may well have ended in tears. Even so, it has opened up possibilities and elicited sentiments that were unthinkable just months ago.
