It has been termed "rape culture", but the bland phrase does not come close to capturing the savagery of a series of crimes that has convulsed India and ignited an intense debate about sexual violence against women.

Much of that debate has centred on the sheer brutality of the attacks, with victims as young as eight being violated and set on fire.
