Mrs Mamata Debi decided to become an e-rickshaw rider a year ago and bought her CityLife three-wheeler for 200,000 rupees by taking a loan.

The tar roads seemed to be melting in a heatwave on an afternoon in May when Mrs Mamata Debi wanted to take it easy at work.

The 41-year-old leaned back in her parked electric rickshaw and considered giving in to a nap when a young woman sat down in the back seat.
