The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a travel advisory urging Singaporeans to defer all non-essential travels to the central Sri Lankan district of Kandy in light of the government imposing a nationwide state of emergency from Tuesday (March 6).

Sri Lanka on Tuesday declared the 10-day state of emergency to stop the spread of violence following clashes between majority Buddhists and members of the minority Muslim community.

"In view of media reports of communal clashes in Kandy, Singaporeans are advised to defer all non-essential travels to Kandy until the situation stabilises," the MFA said in a statement.

Singaporeans who are already in Kandy are advised to exercise vigilance and take all necessary precautions for their personal safety, monitor the news closely and heed the instructions of the local authorities. Protests and large public gatherings should be avoided.

Singaporeans are also urged to purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
