An elephant is seen struggling to stay afloat in deep water some 8km off the island's north-east coast in a Sri Lankan Navy photograph. Calling it a "miraculous escape", spokesman Chaminda Walakuluge said yesterday that the navy mounted a 12-hour rescue when it spotted the elephant struggling after it was washed out to sea.
