India wants to turn cattle into tourism cash cow

Govt wants shelters housing the country's numerous stray holy cows to become a drawcard, but some see problems ahead

The car drives past godowns stocked with animal fodder. A fetid odour rises from them, all the more pungent in the intense, humid heat of a dry monsoon.

As the vehicle moves along a brick-paved path that is caked with dry dung and fodder, rows of cow shelters become apparent. In them, animals eat from mangers, while others appear indolent with little space to move about.
