More than 150 guests at a luxury hotel in the Afghan capital Kabul fled for their lives after gunmen stormed the Intercontinental Hotel in an overnight assault.

At least 18 people were killed during a 13-hour battle between the attackers and Afghan forces, but the death toll is expected to rise, as the authorities comb through the rooms.

Parts of the six-storey building caught fire, as terrified guests tried to escape. Some tied sheets together and climbed down from upper-floor windows.

The Taleban has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came after recent security warnings to avoid hotels and other places frequented by foreigners.
