NEW DELHI • India's government on Aug 5 revoked the special status for Jammu and Kashmir, converting it from a state into a union territory split into three (Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh), and directly administered by the federal government.

The measure - accompanied by a curfew and telecommunication and media blackout - sparked unrest.
