The two photos could not be more different. One shows him speaking at an international geology conference - where he won an award for the best presentation - and, in the other, he is brandishing a grenade launcher as a foot soldier for a terror group in Kashmir.

Mannan Wani Bashir, a 27-year-old Kashmiri PhD scholar, who embodied this despairing and tragic dichotomy, was killed in an encounter with Indian security forces on Oct 11.
