The four victims were dragged out of their homes a little after 1am. The mob, armed with sticks, soon began thrashing the two couples on suspicion of being witches and practising black magic.

By the time the police arrived in this remote corner of Jharkhand in eastern India, the victims' throats had reportedly been slit and the mob had dispersed into the black of the night.
