Anhui native Huang Daqing expected his affair with Tianjin Eco-city to be brief when he bought a home here in 2015 for his daughter to enrol in one of the brand-name secondary schools in the area.

"I thought I'd stay here for three, four years at most, while my daughter attends Nankai High School," said the managing director of electronic parts firm Ecostless in the city.
