China's envoy to Malaysia summoned

China's Ambassador in Kuala Lumpur, Dr Huang Huikang, is being summoned by Malaysia's Foreign Ministry today to clarify his remarks while on a visit to Petaling Street or Chinatown last Friday. Among other things, he had said that China was against those who resort to violence to disrupt public order, seemingly referring to the threat of a pro-Malay protest in the same area the next day. The protest eventually did not materialise.


Festival of Tech next month

In the future, the Merlion may be able to converse with visitors.

Such combinations of art and technology will be featured in the Festival of Tech, the first such event that envisions the impact of technology on future lives through installations and video and art exhibits.

Its organiser, the Infocomm Development Authority, will give more details today on the festival, which will run from Oct 10 to 18.


More figures on US home sales today

The United States will release more data on home sales today which will indicate how firm the recovery in the world's largest economy is.

The Pending Home Sales Index, compiled by the National Association of Realtors, is a forward-looking indicator of the health of the property market there.

It rose 0.5 per cent in July, the sixth rise in seven months, and today's release will look at the performance in August.
