The barking of dogs on several kelongs punctuated the evening stillness as a boat with four people zipped past in the waters off Kukup fishing village in Tanjung Piai, south-western Johor.

High above, an eagle glided in the sky in search of prey while a few hundred metres away, storks and egrets roamed the mud banks.
