- Three men have been killed and three others injured after a fire broke out on a container ship in Johor.

State Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohamad Anuar Mohamad Amdzah said the emergency was reported on board the MSC Kyparissia at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) at 12.23pm on Nov 7.

“A team of firemen arrived at the scene seven minutes later and found that the blaze broke out in the under-hatch section of Block 5 while they were unloading the containers,” he said in a statement.

“The deceased are a 59-year-old Malaysian, a man in his 40s from the Philippines and a Briton in his 40s, all crewmen of the ship.”

He added that those injured are a 26-year-old Malaysian man and two Filipino men, also in their 40s.

Mr Anuar said the injured were sent to a private hospital in Iskandar Puteri for treatment, adding that the early firefighting efforts were carried out by the PTP Fire and Rescue team using two tugboats.

“The department has also opened a forward control post and operations are still ongoing in collaboration with PTP,” he added. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
