Russia's closest friend in South-east Asia lies low amid Ukraine war

BANGKOK - Asean mustered a statement on Russia's invasion of Ukraine over the weekend. Dated two days after Moscow first launched missiles at Ukrainian territory, the document did not mention Russia by name.

Instead, it urged "all relevant parties to exercise maximum restraint" and reminded them to "uphold the principles of mutual respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and equal rights of all nations".
