A Thai policeman standing guard yesterday at the Khlongluang provincial police station in Pathum Thani province as Buddhist monks waited for Phra Dhammachayo, the abbot of the controversial Dhammakaya temple, to turn up to face charges of money-laundering and receiving of illegal donations.

But he did not appear. His lawyers said he had fainted while getting into his car and cancelled the trip.
