Nine, nine, nice

Newly-wed ethnic Malaysian- Chinese couples posing for photographs during a mass wedding at the Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Forty-two couples got married in the mass wedding ceremony held on the ninth day of the ninth month, considered an auspicious date that is believed to bring them good luck and prosperity.

The number nine is pronounced as "jiu" which, in Mandarin and Cantonese, means longevity. It also sounds like and is symbolic of perpetuity and permanence.

Sept 9 has double nine, symbolising double the luck. Couples who get married on this day believe that their marriage will be blessed with longevity.
